Turtle Trot 5k – Nov 8 2025

I am here again on South Padre Island running my 4th Turtle Trot 5k. Compared to my last 5k on October 31st, I was a bit slower by 40 seconds but still within my normal range.

This year’s medal looks really good with the sun as a back light.

As is my tradition now I had dinner at Gabriella’s Italian Grill

This time I had their Garlic Chicken Tortellini and it was very filling.

I’ve been cooking and eating at home more lately and I’m finding that eating out I come away extra stuffed. I really should learn to take some to go, because the portion sizes are almost too much for me now.

After the race this morning, I went to Josephine’s Kitchen on SPI. They have really good waffles and good coffee.

Don’t try to go here for dinner; they are breakfast, and brunch only – 7 AM to 2 PM. One day I need to try one of their mimosas.

After finishing breakfast my body, mainly my legs and knees told me I’d put them through too much trauma and they were planning on staging a protest so I am limiting my adventure this year. So it’s Diet Dr. P, Pringles and this view from my hotel room. I love upgrades, it sometimes pays to have brand loyalty, thanks IHG.

I’m hoping to get a picture of the moon rise tonight so I’m going to test out the hotel’s restaurant.

Tomorrow’s breakfast will be at the Grapevine Cafe, because I love their crab cakes and eggs benedict.

Setup my big camera to capture the moon rise on November 9, 2025. The moon rose further north on the Eastern horizon than I thought. My misconception was the moon and sun rise in similar locations.

To pair with the moon rise here is the sunrise on Sunday, November 9th, 2025. Seems plenty of other people had the same idea as me to wake up early and watch the sunrise.

Well, it’s time to head home and return to reality. Until the next adventure.

Turtle Trot 5k – Nov 9th 2024

I hope you enjoy this extra “non” vacation / vacation post. I guess technically I am on a vacation since I’m staying in a hotel, but it’s not one of my bigger adventures. This is the 3rd time I’ve run this 5K on South Padre Island, Texas. You can check out last year’s rambling here and the video I made from the 1st run is linked there. This race was different.

Well, the main difference was the weather, but that will be discussed later. To try and stay chronological let me start with dinner on Friday night. I know I ate at Gabriella’s last year but don’t remember if I ate there for the first race. But the past is the past and we are talking about the present err closer past… Well, I ate there again last night and had a wonderful meal. Ignoring the salad which was very lame, the wine and the main course was amazing. I tried the Pasta a La Tonno, which is basically pasta and tuna. But that doesn’t give this meal it due… There were sun-dried tomatoes in the sauce, along with mushrooms and the tuna was cooked medium rare just the way a tuna steak should be. Just check out the picture.

Pasta a La Tonno

I ate too much garlic bread so there wasn’t room for dessert in fact I didn’t even finish all of the linguine. I did eat all the sun-dried tomatoes.

Now to skip to Saturday, race day… oh before I make the jump… I wish I’d remembered there was going to be fireworks on Friday evening. I only realized when I was awakened when they started going off. Sadly, I was on the wrong side of the island so if I had wanted to see them it was going to be more difficulty than I wanted to deal with in my PJs. On to the race…

There wasn’t any rain! and it wasn’t cold! It was still windy as ___, err I’ll let you fill in the word you want. The one I’m thinking isn’t “acceptable”. Overall, the race was as enjoyable as any other race, that isn’t cold and rainy. My overall time wasn’t the best, but it wasn’t the worst. I am disappointed that my official time wasn’t recorded and I’m trying to contact the race coordinator on why. Based on my own timer, I was 10th place in my age division, taking about 44 minutes to run the 5 km or 3.1 miles.

After the race something strange happened, it seems I have a fan club of 2. I know, I was surprised too. After I finished the race, a young woman came up to congratulate me, I thought it was weird, but a fist-bump seemed appropriate, and I thought nothing more of it. About 10 minutes later as I was wondering to the team that had been passing out water for the runners, they were the girls that run the desk at my gym, the first young woman and another young woman found me and said, “you are the long beard guy”. Seems they’ve notice me at the last few races and decided to approach me at the end of this race. We exchanged first names, discussed the next races, the Turkey Trot and the Christmas series and then went to take pictures on the beach with our medals. It was very strange.

After the race I walked back to the hotel to take a shower and head off for waffles.

I really like Josephine’s. The waiter noticed I was playing Pokémon Go and as he brought me my coffee, and later my food, we discussed the game and how hard it was to get a group together to do the “big” raids.

After breakfast I headed to the kite shop to buy another yard “spinner” for Christmas. Last year I bought Santa on a bicycle. This year I’m adding a reindeer on a bicycle. While there I had a conversation with the owners and another customer about the Texas Renaissance Faire. To summarize the conversation, if you don’t dress up you are the strange person at TRF. Supposedly, the guy that does the Texas Bucket List visited with his family and seemed to have a good time even if they didn’t dress up.

So, it wasn’t even noon yet and I was tempted to go back to my hotel room, but just couldn’t do it. The weather was too good, and I had to do more outside. So, it was off to the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. The last time I was here was a few years ago in July. The inside presentation has improved with the addition of a reptile room and the addition of tortoises outside. You can purchase food to feed the alligators and the tortoises; however, you can only feed the adolescent alligators.

There is/was whatever, a Birding Festival going on at the SPI Convention Center, so there were lots of “birder” out there with cameras and binoculars. They were not disappointed. Just look at the pictures I was about to take with my phone.

Breakfast was still sitting well in my belly and I had signed up for a lecture series by Dr. Bart Ehrman on the Book of Acts, so I head back to my hotel room to watch the last part of the live broadcast.

I tried to watch on my laptop, but I could not get a good enough connection to the hotel Wi-Fi so I gave up and used my phone, which I’m currently using as a hotspot to type this post, to listen/watch the Zoom sessions.

Since I was no longer tied to my laptop, I decided to take a walk to the jetties and listen the lectures. I ended up walking almost 3 miles.

I did see on Google, that there was a statue of Jesus (Jesus Christ of the Fisherman Statue) near the jetties, so I wanted to go see what that was all about and once I read the inscription on the monument the statue made more sense.

Statue of Jesus Christ of the Fisherman

This is a monument to all the fisherman that went to sea and didn’t come back. There are plaques along the base of the statue, and I wonder if those are some of the people that didn’t return.

I returned to my hotel for an early dinner or a late lunch depending on your point of view. I had drink vouchers to use. In the past I’ve eaten the fish tacos from the beach bar at the hotel, but decided I’d give the fried fish a try. It was good, but I’m not going to write praised about it. I finished my meal with the fancy pina colada in a pineapple.

Now that drink was good. Not sure it was $20 good, but it was very tasty, and I scraped the inside of the pineapple to get more pineapple.

I realized it’s only like 6 PM, but the sun had set, it was dark, and I was tired of walking, and after the pina colada I wasn’t going to be driving anywhere, so I headed back to my hotel room and started writing this blog.

Well, I hope you enjoyed my story. Tomorrow I will be grabbing a breakfast at a local restaurant and then heading back home to relax for the rest of my Sunday.

Crab Cake Eggs Benedict

I had to take one final walk along the beach after breakfast. The surf was still rough but there was less wind.

Look a baby crab.

Until the next adventure… which will most likely be Christmas. 🎅🎄

Turtle Trot 5K November 2023

This is the 2nd time I’ve run this race on South Padre Island. The first time it was windy, cold and rainy and today it was windy, rainy and chilly. Here is the video I posted to my YouTube from last year. It was too rainy this year for me to do any filming while I was running.

Video of last year’s race… the wind made it seem like I was running in a cloud of sand.

Just like last year, I stayed at the Holiday Inn Resort, the official hotel of the run. It is a beach hotel so I’m going to give it some latitude on room design. I’ve stayed in better Holiday Inns, but the room was clean and the beds are comfy. The computer desk/table I’m writing at sucks. It’s too high and was designed for dinning. So if my only complaint is a crappy table, it’s a decent spot to say, especially if you are here for the Water Park next door.

I’m going to try out the restaurant tonight and if I remember I update this post and let the readers know what the food is like.

Last night I had fish tacos at Bob’s on the Bay that were killer. They did something different with their blacken’ spicy and the chipotle tarter sauce was the icing on the tacos.

So, back to the race… I got dressed with the race T-Shirt and a windbreaker that I hoped would be waterproof, yeah it really wasn’t. I was soaking wet by the end of the race. Thank God is wasn’t cold, it was in the low 60s, unlike last year when it was in the 40s. I’m proud of my run, because I was able to run it from start to finish. This is only the 3rd 5K I can say I completed running. I’m thinking the rain and wind forced me to start slow, unlike most of my races which helped me maintain my stamina for the duration.

Along the route and near my hotel, someone the day before built a sand castle city. It was a nice feature to enjoy as I ran paced. I’m guess the “feature” is a volcano? Maybe?

Sand Castle City

After such and early run, start time was something like 7:08 AM, I was hungry. Last year I ate at a cafe called Josephine’s Kitchen and the cinnamon waffles were great. This year I went back to try the pecan pancakes and I wasn’t disappointed and I wasn’t able to finish them. Oh, they were so, so good. Also, I’m just going to have to skip lunch. I’m so full.

The rain just won’t let up. My plan of walking along the beach and store fronts went out the window. After my shower, I wasn’t in the mood to get wet and cold again, so I headed back to my hotel room and hoped the rain would eventually let up.

And it did. It hasn’t stopped raining, but when it switched to a lite drizzle I ventured out again to a kite store and then Sea Turtle Inc (a sea turtle rescue center). I bought a few none kite items at the store, the Santa on a bicycle you see in the video and a wind chime for my back patio.

I toured Sea Turtle Inc, last year and decide to do it again this year, to support their effort and get better pictures of the turtles. The ones in the big tanks can’t be released back into the wild because of injuries, deformities or human handling. The ones in the hospital are rehabilitated and then released. Back in 2021 when the extreme cold reached south Texas, Sea Turtle Inc and the locals that live on SPI rescued about 180 turtles and were able to save 150 of them, returning them to the Gulf of Mexico once the cold weather was over. I feel this is a worth cause and you should visit their website and consider supporting them. Here is the link again, Sea Turtle Inc. As I side note, I hope I got the names correct below. I was busy listening to the volunteer telling me the story of each turtle and didn’t take the picture of their name plates until later.

That concludes my adventure this Saturday, all but dinner tonight. Until the next adventure, which should be New Orleans the day after Christmas. Keep safe and well.

Today is the Race

I’m  as ready as I can be for my 2nd 5K.  Since I have a 45 minute drive to the race location, I think I will eat a small breakfast.  Current temperature is 78 degrees with 83% humidity… going to be a real sweaty race.  To bad the race wasn’t last weekend when the cold front came through and temperatures were done in the low 60’s…  I’ll post a pic or send a link to pics once I finish today… Did I mention there are cupcakes at the end of the race? Who won’t run for cupcakes?

Didn’t run this morning cause I woke up with a bad chest cold… A full day of activity and some cold meds and I was up for the challenge of running this afternoon/evening in the heat. On a side note, when does fall start its still so dang hot…  I’m trying to remember what my first 5K time was.  I think this is it… well at least its a 5K, might not be the Turkey Trot  (46 min 32 sec).

Here is today’s run.  Did an 11 min mile my best so far. 🙂

2 weeks left… making contingency plans

Tried to run 5K this morning.. EPIC FAIL.. I really haven’t been putting my best effort toward training, so I only have myself to blame. In the words of Yoda, “Do or do not, there is no try” so I will run everyday this week and go just a bit further each day. I know I can walk the 5K, but I really want to run 60% of it at this point… so 3K running 2K walking.

Start Time
Sep 23, 2012 6:06 AM
Distance
2.71 miles
Duration
38m:34s
Avg Speed
14:15 min/mi
