Texas Renaissance Festival 2025 – Day 1

First, last night’s arrival… The drive up was just as Google maps predicted, this is a first.

Check-in at the campground was quick and efficient, now finding a site wasn’t so much…

I arrived just a bit after 11:30 PM and quiet hours start at 12 AM, so I was rushed to find a site, in the dark. Why, yes the moon was nearly full, but other than one or two street lights on the dirt roads it was very dark, and the street signs didn’t really glow in my truck’s headlights. I did find an open area and someone was setting up their RV across the road. I decided to gear up with my head lamp and pitch my tent. I should have aired up the mattress first, since I completed the tent placement a few minutes after the bonfire revealers headed to their abodes. The ground was hard, oh yeah that moon… Seems my tent’s back panel is all darkened mesh, so the moon light shows right through. Glad I brought my eye mask. πŸ‘

Ok, on to the real reason you are reading this… The renfaire..

Sunrise
My castle

The other travelers started to awaken from their castles around 7:30 AM, and everyone in my eye sight seemed to be up and moving by 8:15. As I type this, I’m smelling someone nearby cooking bacon. I personally am saving my appetite for some food from the vendors. I chose at the last minute to leave my portal stove at home and just make sandwiches if I get hungry because I ran out of my food allowance. Don’t worry, I plan on eating as much as I can. πŸ—πŸ”πŸ₯¨πŸ§πŸͺ🍻🍽️🍷

Well, I think it’s getting close to time to dress to meet the King and his court at this year’s 51st Renfaire.

To start the morning off right..

You need a pint of Black Death, an imperial stout, some Scotch eggs and a breakfast juggling show.

After the show I visited some shops.

This is the shop that sells bottles of mead that you can take home after you leave or you can open a bottle can carry it around and sample as you walk.

I had a schedule of shows I wanted to see, but I skipped the next show for more window shopping.

My next pre-purchased event was mead tasting.

Renmead

This new brand is a combination of 3 meadries that individualLy couldn’t meet the demands of the festival but together they could. Thus 3 became 1 and the juggling fools became their logo.

Time for lunch… which was fish and chips. Sorry no picture.

I wanted to make sure I knew where my final booked class of the day was, so I again skipped my planned schedule of shows and went to find the glass blowing shop.

In this class you are guided by the artisan in the process of glass blowing while you make your own pumpkin. The artisan manages the heating in the furnace and does most of the important shaping but you do feel a part of the experience.

I’m hoping to pick my pumpkin up on Sunday, but if they will mail it to you as part of the package deal when you book the class. This was the best thing of the day.

Speaking of the day, sleeping on the ground, and all the mead I had been drinking, started to get the best of me. So I headed back to my camp site, err castle, to take a short nap with the intention to return for the final events of the night at the arena…

My nap was 4 hours, and I probably would have slept more if the fireworks show that concludes the evening hadn’t awakened me at 8 PM.

I was still very tired so I just made a sandwich and went to bed for real.

So ends day one.

June 4th 2025 – Vegas Day 2

Just shy of 6 AM

It’s the next day, for real this time, and my body didn’t get the memo that I’m in a different time zone. I was awake again at 4:15 AM, at least I don’t hurt as much as I thought I would. I should have brought my new shoes instead of an older pair (I’m using them for hiking later, still need to replace my hiking boots after last summers issue.) And good news, Red Rock Canyon has a scenic drive loop with parking at the easy trails, so that’s today’s plan. I should even be back before Weather.com says hiking is bad.

Red Rock Canyon is beautiful and is designed to be driven with set parking locations and trails branching from them so you can get better views. I tried recording a video driving the route but my setup didn’t work. If I really want to record a drive I’m going to have to buy a dashboard camera. Here are some pictures. I only hiked one trail and it was short, 0.2 miles out and back.

Since I got back from Red Rock, I’ve just been relaxing. I baked a pizza while my laptop did some updates. I’m tempted to take a nap before heading out again.

Tonight, I’m going to the Excalibur for the Tournament of Kings.

Seriously, I think whoever designed Las Vegas and how the casinos connected worked for Elder Scrolls Online and learned the “you can’t get there from here” principle. The signage in the casinos is no help either. Now I do admit, once you figure out the system I think you can go from the north to south via casino lobbies and shopping areas. Now learning the pattern probably takes a life time πŸ˜†

Well, I’m in The Excalibur drinking overpriced old fashion, but at least I’m not walking and in the sun anymore.  My dinner and show starts in about 2 hours. I just signed up for the MGM Rewards and guess I’ll figure out how they work playing slots.

Gave slots a try.. didn’t go well. I saw people all around me with small wins, but I bust each spin. The odds are not in my favor.

I did watch a bit of black jack play and there was a lady killing it. Never changed her bet just kept winning and banking the win. Tempted me but the odds are not in my favor. So off to drown my sour in $6 draft beer. At least I have the show to look forward to. Before we chat about the show, I want to mention it’s worth looking for happy hours that are near the casinos. Was able to enjoy a few beers and even had a bartender originally from El Paso.

I’ve been seated for the king’s tournament.

The Tournament of the King was cool. Be prepared for indoor fireworks and the evil wizard has a flame staff.Β  Wow you can feel the heat. But why did they only give me 4 baby potatoes? Seriously, half a chicken but only 4 baby potatoes?

The meal (I ate a potato)

After the show, I tried my chances at 2 for 1 blackjack table… OMG.. I only lost 1 hand.  Risked $20 and walked away with $70.. $50 profit.  I so wanted to go back and keep trying; however, the King’s Mule kicked in and I couldn’t math… So walked, no ran away… πŸ˜†

Looking north from the Skybridge by the MGM

Every wonder where the MGM live happens well here it is

And no, it isn’t one way glass. These people are doing their job with us, average Joe public, watching them. How I know, one of them smiled at me when I asked out load if it was one way glass.

Off to bed now, well maybe going to take a bit to come off the winning high.

Ok, not bed yet. Need to do a few dailies in ESO.

Tomorrow is Hoover Dam.

June 3rd 2025 Vegas Day 1

To be honest the title of this post is a lie.

I started typing and taking photos on June 2nd while flying the first leg of my flights to Vegas. Leg one was to Houston. Leg one is almost always to Houston, sometimes Dallas speaks in but Houston is the main step one.

I normally fly Southwest and this trip is now different. I collect points during the year and spend them on flights. On this flight I booked business class and forgot you get a drink voucher, it’s still the morning, but it’s 5 O’clock somewhere and I can’t let the drink voucher go to waste.

This is an India Pale Ale brewed with spice. It’s not too bad. I’d ask for it again.

As we start the descent into Houston, I’m really enjoying the clouds out the window.

It’s so interesting how the clouds are gathered up into lines, at least from my view above them. The pattern may mean I Google why. So many things start with that question, “why?”. Don’t worry I’m not going to go all philosophical on you. I’ve only had one beer. πŸ˜†

Leg 2, as they say.. I wonder why it’s called that? (see what I did there? still need more beer to wax philosophical πŸ˜‡)

So it’s now today and I’m going to check out things you can do in Las Vegas. There will be some shows, there will be museums and there may be a wee bit of gambling..

The only trouble is I’m awake at 4 AM and last night’s short drive around, I just don’t feel safe to walk around this early. I wasn’t nervous when I was in New York City, but that city is more pedestrian friendly. Once my watch charges I’m going to walk around the resort a bit. Should be closer to sunrise by then.

View from my room’s patio at 4 AM

Ok, my opinion of Vegas has changed with the rise of the sun. First, there is no traffic, and second I’m not the only tourist up at the crack of dawn and taking a walk down the Vegas Strip. I even saw people jogging, so my plan to walk/jog a 5K is back on for Thursday or Friday morning. Oh, it’s also in the 70s in the morning not the 90s like in the afternoon.

On my way back to the resort I found a shopping / restaurant area between casinos. One other thing.. these casinos run blocks. Cesar’s is at least 2 blocks long. Makes it hard to find cut streets to get you around like in normal cities.

The view at 8 AM. Look at those mountains in the background πŸ₯°

The Sphere watching over Vegas.

Today’s adventure is either starting at the Natural History Museum or the Van Gogh exhibit that I’ve tried to see twice in Texas. I’ll probably do both but not sure which will be first at least both are in doors.

Only ended up going to the Natural History Museum. It had some good exhibits for kids. I personally enjoyed the recreation of King Tutames Tomb.

I was hungry after and headed back to the Strip to try one of Gordon Ramsey’s places. It was a take away fish eatery and I wanted a sit down place, so off to Virgil’s BBQ only a few doors down.

They have a really good pulled pork sandwich.

My phone had been sending warnings about rain and I like last night it would just pass by. That was not the case so another round of beer.

If you are going to get caught in the rain, a bar is a pretty good spot to wait it out, and it’s happy hour. πŸ˜‡

My only plan for the day is to see Cirque du Soleil – KA (Trailer ) at 6 PM, it’s 3:40 PM at the moment so plenty of time.

Had a walk through a few casinos, saw a poker tournament and a movie scene being filmed. It looked like Elle Flanning.

Elle Flanning?

I may just have to play one round of Blackjack at a $5 table. I’m such a big spender πŸ˜†.

The show starts soon back when it’s over. Here are the only pictures I’m taking; going to enjoy the moment.

That was an amazing show… The secret supporting actor was the person controlling the stage floors, they moved… At times the performers were jumping and swing around on a vertical stage. It even had a story, but it was a bit hard to follow because there were 2 heroes that went on separate hero journeys in magical realms. Everything concluded with an epic battle, on a vertical stage between our heroes and the main villain. In the end, the heroes won, the world was made right and we we got to see a dancing crab, turtle and starfish. (You have to see the show to understand.)

At the end of the day, well what I’m calling the end I walked 13.1 miles and earned an award from my Garmin fitness tracker.

Now, I’m tired but not ready to go to bed. I’m pretty sure something is going to hurt in the morning. If things go to plan, I’ll have an early start for a hike in Red Rock Canyon and be back to the resort before 1 PM.

I’ll close with some more pictures of the Las Vegas strip.

Until tomorrow.

Time for a summer trip – June 2025

I’m currently sitting in the airport lobby waiting for the ticket agent to go on shift. Seems Southwest Airlines or maybe some new TSA rule doesn’t allow you to check in 2 hours before your flight and the airport I’m flying out of is too small to have multiple flights back to back. I learned about the 4 hour rule when I traveled to Utah ( https://maethar.com/2023/06/27/utah-final-day/  ) but this 2 hour thing is new to me.

Now that I got checked in, I asked the ticket agent and found out it’s a local airport policy. The annoying thing is the kiosk self-checks are also turned of 🀷. Oh well, got my boarding passes and drink vouchers πŸ˜‡… I’m off to my adventure. Check back tomorrow for details of where I am and what I’ve done so far.

Texas Renaissance Festival – Opening Day

October 12, 2024

After many hours of travel I arrived at the humble Holiday Inn of Tomball. The kitchen had been closed for hours and very few patrons remained awake so I retired to my room, tired and hungry.

Sleep did not take long to over take me; however, it was short because of my excitement of the day ahead. I had been invited to the 50th opening of the King’s court.

I began to stir hours before the sun would rise. I impatiently waited for the kitchen to reopen so I could have my breakfast and hours before I needed to dress and ride to the Festival.

As I traveled to the enchanted lands, the road I traveled was covered in fog adding to the excitement as the miles melted away.

A suggestion to any and all that travel to this enchanted real, have your papers ready. (Print your tickets) I saved probably 15 or 20 minutes waiting on line, if I had brought digital tickets.

The lines to enter.

The land is divided into smaller realms that mirror our world.

You can visit… Tuscany, Burgundy, Poland, Germany… You get the idea. Each area has its “special” food.

You can also find Butter Beer from the magical realm of Harry Potter.

Butter Beer

Along with food and drinks you can find many forms of entertainment, comedy underlies almost everything. Keep a lookout for the ratings shown on the stage. Unless you want to have questions from your children before you are ready. Stay Away!

“R” means adult content which is more than just bad words.

I always enjoy the juggling acts.

3 jugglers with flaming pins

And you should always stop for a magician especially if it is The Merlin.

Merlin has returned from retirement for this year’s 50th

There is also an enchanted garden you can walk through, you might find a shrine or sites to rest and contemplate the universe.

You might be wondering why would parents bring children here if the entertainment could raise questions earlier than wanted or give them ideas that could burn the house down… Well there is a whole area that has carnival games.

You could catapult a frog, catch a fish, throw a lance or axe, and even ride an elephant.

Elephants and camels near the petting zoo

There are also some huge swings, a climbing tower and a bungee bouncing trampoline.

Oh and the vendors… Some are just reselling junk you can buy from Amazon, but other handcraft in wood, leather, cloth and metal.

I was even able to custom order a chainmail linked bracelet that the artist is going to attach a gem stone that I had in a necklace, but that won’t be ready for a few weeks. If I remember I’ll add the picture or maybe make a new post.

Final thing…

Be sure to check out the extras you can purchase. You could eat a feast and be entertained with the King and Queen, you can do a Scotch tasting or wine

The day ends with fireworks, but I had left the realm before the closing event.

I am currently trying to decide if my feet can take another day of walking after walking 18k steps or 9.9 miles today.

Here is a very short video collage, walking into the venue, juggling, bird of prey and full metal combat.

Huzzah!

Hike at Eagle Lake – June 2024

This morning when I woke up I debated just sitting in my room and reading a book, but reviewing things to do near Lake Tahoe I decided to drive to the Eagle Falls Trail and walk to Eagle Lake. It’s only a 1 mile hike, up a mountain. Going up took me almost and hour, but coming down was quicker at 45 minutes.

Pictures going up to Eagle Lake

I’m glad they had rocks or logs along the trail that you could sit and listen to nature. The trail was not difficult to find your footing, but the “stairs” were still steep. This was a very popular trail due to the short length, so I wasn’t alone with people of all ages and their canine friends. There were even some individuals that had fishing poles and nets, specifically to fish in the lake and river that feeds the lake. I did see some fish jumping in the lake, but I didn’t witness any one catch any fish.

Eagle Lake

Wow, the water was crystal clear, but I shouldn’t expect anything less. My question is how did the first fish get up to this lake? Something to ponder.

The hike back down

I’m sorry this pictures are not in order. And I can’t seem to make wordpress to order them chronologically. They are basically in reverse order. For example, the squirrel, who I think was looking for a handout, was the 2nd to last picture I took today, the bridge was the picture I took before I took the picture of Lake Tahoe thru the trees.

I only hiked 2 miles, but almost all of it was vertical. I also had the sole of both of my hiking boots started to come off and by the end of the hike I was wearing reverse flip flops. The soles were only attached at the heel.

I’m glad I decided to put my running shoes in the trunk. With my hiking boots out of commission I wasn’t going to try to hike anymore trails plus I really need to get hiking poles that I can pack in my luggage. Just doing some free thinking. Back to the narrative.

So, I put the top down on the Mustang and drove back to the resort to make lunch, do laundry and write up this blog. I’ve got tomorrow (Friday) left to experience the area. Going to take the rest of the afternoon to recharge. There is a part of me that wants to get a picture of the sunsetting over Lake Tahoe, driving some of the mountain roads are nerve racking even in a sports car that hugs the road.

Short video collage of the sounds of nature, with music playing to fill in the dead spots.

Exploring Carson Range and Genoa, Nevada: Sunrise and Wildlife June 2024

Welcome to the next installment of my travel blog for June 2024. As the title says, we will be exploring the Carson Range today and tomorrow, or at least we will be staying on the Carson Range side east of Lake Tahoe. I’m planning on exploring Lake Tahoe on Thursday and Friday, so keep coming back. On to today’s adventure..

Sunrise… well and attempt

First, I want you the reader to know that I almost needed a blood transfusion after trying to get these pictures. I should have realized that being so near a wetland the mosquitos would be a force to be reconned with.

I’m thinking this video shows dragon flies feasting on the mosquitos.

Now on to the sunrise photos.

A morning walk to Genoa

Genoa is 1.5 miles north of David Walley’s Resort, where I’m staying. Along the way wild life was encountered both on the journey there and back.

Enjoy some lizards, bees, and birds. The bunny rabbit and squirrel were too fast for me to get a clear picture of them.

Genoa, Nevada

Genoa is the oldest permanent settlement in Nevada. It was founded in 1851; however, Nevada didn’t exist then, it was part of the Utah Territories. The original settlers were part of the Mormon Church and the settlement was originally called Mormon Station. You can learn more here at the official Nevada Historical Website.

You are probably thinking “why is there a statue of a woman holding a tray of candy?” Well, there is a story behind this statue. Back in 1919 the town wanted to install electric streetlights but didn’t have the funds. Lillian suggested the town hold a Candy Dance. Citizen danced and purchased candy from the local candymakers, and the funds raised went to purchasing and installing the streetlights. The city liked her idea and vola “let there be light”; however, there always is a however when it comes to city budgets. Who was going to pay the monthly electric bill for the lights? Well, candy will. If a Candy Dance worked once why not make it a yearly event, and the city did just that. The tradition lives on to this day. The city has expanded it to include an Arts and Craft Fair and the money goes into the Genoa City budget. Sometimes it pays to live in a small town.

Before heading back, I channeled my inner hobbit and went for 2nd breakfast at the Genoa Country Store. I enjoyed an egg sandwich with sausage on an English Muffin. Now being recharged, I headed back to the resort.

Onward to a Museum… after a short break

Honestly, I need another rest after walking there and back again; round trip was 3 miles or a 5K race. I did contemplate running the track tomorrow, but I’ve ruled against it. The weekend after I get back I’ve got a 5K. Too much of a good thing can turn out bad, hey, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. Back to the history lesson.

This museum is only open from 11 AM to 3 PM and is located in busy city building. The center room and the downstairs is the museum while the rooms on the side and front are for city business. The cost is $5 and I feel that is a reasonable fee. On the main floor the walls have murals. As you enter the wall on the left tells the history of the Mustang and Nevada’s push to create a safe place for wild horse herds to roam. I didn’t even know there are herds of wild horses, but 10 states have reserved areas for them. You can learn more here at the Herd Managment website.

Sheep, I want to now talk about sheepherding. Why? because I can… or it’s actually related to the history of Nevada. Sheep herding in Nevada began in the 1880s, when Basque families from Spain and France immigrated to the Western United States for better job opportunities. They supplied the gold and silver miners with mutton and wool. This was a solitary life for the herder who could only count on his dogs and the 100’s of sheep he was managing. You can learn a bit more here at the National Park Systems Website. What little is known about these men comes from the carvings they left on the Aspen trees in the area.

Now let’s take a moment to talk about the first peoples, the indigenous tribes of the Lake Tahoe area. They called themselves WΓ‘βˆ™Ε‘iw, or Washoe in English. I’m just going to copy directly from the tribes website, “The four directions of WΓ‘βˆ™Ε‘iw territory was occupied by different bands of the WΓ‘βˆ™Ε‘iw that made up the whole of the tribe. Although one tribe, each band was unique in its own area of occupation with subtle differences in cultural diversity and language patterns.” To get the full history I recommend following the link to the Washoe Tribe Website and downloading the PDF writen by the tribe telling their history. To quickly summarize, European settlers moved in for the gold and silver and destroyed the tribe’s way of life. The WΓ‘βˆ™Ε‘iw were always an adaptable people and they managed to survive and keep their traditions if not their way of life. At the museum there is a room dedicated to this tribe which was famous for its weaved baskets.

One last thing before we move on to more modern times.

As a fan of archeology and digging things up to learn more about the past, the statement here saddens me. I realize this happened before archeology became a solid science, but I wonder what history we could have learned if an archeologist had been called in to excavate the area. From what I understand about the Indigenous tribes of the area they didn’t do much with stone, because it was heavy, and they moved around frequently. Why did they take the time to carve this stone statue? We will never know. Which gives me the chance to stand on a soap box and preach for a moment. It is a federal crime to dig up, remove or relocate artifacts found in public parks and native tribal lands. If you happen upon something, record the gps location, take pictures don’t touch anything, and then report what you found to the state or federal government agency. If you want fame, I’m sure you will get more credit for reporting and letting the professionals do their job than making a TikTok or Instagram post about it. I’m now getting off my soap box. Let’s continue to more modern times.

Let’s look at some medical equipment and telephone equipment…

Isn’t that old water fountain cool? And check out all those phones? f

Wow, it’s taken me 2 hours to type, edit and upload all of this content. Time does fly when you are having fun. I’m having to remind myself to enjoy the collection of content as much as writing about it. That’s all for today, tomorrow there will be blue chicken eggs for breakfast and I’ve decided to drive to Virginia City myself and skip the guided tour. I honestly didn’t want to be trapped for 5 hours. Virginia City is only 45 minutes away and I can visit or skip the museums along the way. So until tomorrow, have a great day, enjoy a pizza. I had one for lunch.

Off to Lakes and Mountains – June 2024

It’s June 10, 2024 and I’m up very early for my flights to Genoa, Nevada. Genoa is located on the east side of the mountains that encircle Lake Tahoe. I have no set plans other than to hike some easy trails, tour the lake, and visit some historical sites; hopefully along the way I can take some good pictures and share my experience.

Traveling Day

I made it to Austin and now I’m waiting for my connecting flight. Since it’s early in the morning I also just paid $13 for $5 breakfast tacos, but I’m no longer hungry. Not going to talk about prices at airports where people are trapped and have no choice when all the prices are fixed.

Something I found interesting is the gate I arrived at is the gate I’m leaving through. Maybe that will improve my odds at winning the lottery this week. πŸ€ͺ

What to do while waiting

The main thing I’m doing or did do was listen to some podcasts. My listening choices are mostly historical or about Christianity. Here are the episodes I listened to I do recommend them if you like learning things.

Boarding the next plane

I’m getting ready to board the next plane to Reno with a stop to load / unload in Las Vegas. Does that count so I can say I’ve been to Vegas? Because honestly I can’t think of a reason to go to Vegas unless it’s to see a musician’s show. Oh well.

A plane, not the plane I’m on. πŸ€ͺ

So the picture of the plane is the flight before mine. It would be cool to have the super power of being in two locations at once but sadly I don’t have that power or do I? πŸ˜‡

Made it to Vegas baby… Not getting off the plane though

Next stop is Reno..

At the time I’m writing / typing this I’m glad I was able to take a few naps on the plan flights. I’m thinking the 2 hour time change is going to catch up with me eventually, but until then Go Hard or Go Home!

So I arrived in Reno and before you can even leave the airport you find these machines.

And no I didn’t give them a try. I have terrible luck; plus, I’m holding all my luck up to win the Mega Millions Lottery. One day my numbers will hit, I will probably have been dead for 50 years, but still they will hit. Hehe

The rental process was a breeze with Enterprise, I did all the paperwork the day before and all they did was verify my credit card and I was given the key fab to a 2023 Mustang Convertible. (Pictures tomorrow or maybe Wednesday) I want one now. The Android Auto synced with my phone without a single issue and I was able to use Google Maps via my phone linked to the Android Auto to navigate. It even started to play the Spotify playlist I was listening to on the airplane. Sometimes technology can be cool, when it works.

So, here is the view from my room, in Genoa, Nevada. I’m on the east side of the mountains that encircle Lake Tahoe.

I drove through the small town of Genoa, at a very, very, very slow speed. This was not by choice, the speed limit was only 25 mph. It’s 1.5 miles from where I’m staying and there is a path that walks along the river in the picture above that I’m thinking of walking tomorrow and getting the history of this little town. So that is Tuesday morning planned. There is a van / train tour to Virginia City that interests me, but its $90 and I’m debating if I like trains enough. FYI, I do like trains, go back and check out these previous trips. So it’s highly probable there will be a train trip, if I can schedule it.

And with that, I’m going to end the post. But one last things, wow groceries in this town are expensive compared to home. A package of 10 slices of cheese costs me $2.60 in Texas and is $3.90 here. Until tomorrow.
