Goliad, Salado and Thanksgiving

So this trip started out interesting, while loading my truck this morning I locked the door to my kitchen and had to bust the door jam to get back inside.  I’m not looking forward to repairing the door frame.  After that though, the trip was very smooth and the traffic was light.

My first stop was Goliad State Park for  a geocache and to visit the mission I first saw 30 years ago as a middle schooler.  It is much smaller than I remember.  The mission itself was restored in 1935 by the CCC after laying in ruins since the 1800’s.

I then headed over to Round Rock to have lunch with one of my online gaming friends at Kerbey Lane Café.  The coffee was very good and the specialty yam pancakes were as good a the homemade sausage.

I then set off for Salado and my first Bed and Breakfast experience.  The funny thing here is I’m the only person staying here. So I have know one with whom to play cards and I don’t have to negotiate with anyone on what TV show we should watch.

It is now dinner time, sort of, so I setout to find something to eat.  The place suggested by my sister is closed on Monday and Tuesday, so I had to find plan B.  In the process I found this newly opened craft brewery / winery bar.  They don’t serve food, but do allow you to bring it in from the outside.  I chose to head to one of the few places open for dinner and had some BBQ.  Once my hunger was sated I went to quench my thirst at that bar I mentioned.  There were 50+ Texas draft beers on tap and I enjoyed 2 flights of 4 varieties.  All I would drink again.

Flight Check

I am back at the B&B, writing up these notes and watching the movie 2012 on SyFy.  Breakfast is at 9 AM and after there are a few sites here in Salado I want to see before heading out to a park and do some more geocaching.

Birding in Texas in June = very sweaty

This morning, I headed out to Estero Llano Grande to experience a guided bird seeing tour.  It was 8:30 am in south Texas and the humidity was through the roof.  All the rain we have received in the last week, while good for filling up the wetland area, brought out the mosquitoes in force.  I was trying a new bug repellent that was “green” so it had no DEET. The guide leading the tour had a DEET repellent.  Both worked as well as the other, meaning not really well at all, but mine smelled better.

On the tour we saw about 30 birds, which is less than normal, but it is June and most of the birds are done with their migration.  I also got one Geocache done; however, there was no log so I couldn’t sign.  Here are some of the birds I was able to photograph well enough that I wanted to share.  FYI I’m having to use the check-off list and google to double check the names, so I might be wrong. Enjoy!

Another week in the books

Well another week is drawing to a close and I just got home from an impromptu sound gig.  I was able to help out a local singer/song writer at her weekly music show since her regular soundman double booked himself.  So if you are looking for a new country artist to follow check out @LaurenAshCor on Twitter or LaurenCorzine on FacebookIMG_20160506_175442402.jpg

Also I’m still geocaching and very excited about the new geocoins I received in the mail.  They are much bigger than I thought so its going to take a bit to find a large enough cache to hold them. In my area there are too many nano, micros and small caches.  The most popular is recycled pill bottles. When I get ready to set free my geocoin to the world I’ll post a picture and a link so anyone can follow the coins adventures. Here are two pictures from my weekly geocaching…

The sunflowers reminded my of my grandmother, who just loved sunflowers.  She even decorated her Christmas tree with only sunflowers one year.  It’s always good to be reminded of the ones you love that are no longer with you, and can only travel with you in your heart.

Geocaching 4 days straight

I guess I can call it a healthy addiction if I ignore the sunburn and all the scratches… I am getting out and walking a lot, coming home sweaty and dirty like I was a little kid.  I’ve found 20 caches so far.  Still plenty around me, so tomorrow will be another round…

Geocaching = FUN

I just discovered geocaching this past week and just spent 3 hours driving and walking around where I live to discover some these awesome caches.

Above are some pictures of me with some of the caches I found.  Notice some can be very small.
Think real life meets exploration in any MMO except by the end of your hunt you are very tired and have almost walked 5+ miles.  I so wish I knew about this 3 years ago when I really started traveling.  Guess I will just have to retrace all my steps over the last 3 years… 🙂

Oh, you are asking your self what is geocaching? Sorry, I got excited and if you don’t play MMOs I’m not even speaking your language… Geocaching is when someone hides a container with a sheet of paper or a log book so that when it is discovered by others they can write their name and date.  Some of these containers are large enough for people to place items inside and retrieve items.  There are even special coins and tags that are designed to be taken by the finder and placed into one of the next caches they find so the original owner can track the items journey.  This is all accomplished through the website Geocaching

So how do you get started…

Well you need to get a GPS device, either a stand alone or your cell phone with a geocaching app downloaded or directly copy the GPS coordinates from the website and then head out for your adventure.  The GPS coordinates are just to get you to the destination, say within 20 feet.  It is now your job to look around and try to find the hiding place.  Seeing as this was my first time, I made use of all the logged information on the website about each of the caches.  Most people try to be careful and not reveal the exact location or even what the object looks like.  People tracking down the caches can upload pictures and make comments on the geocache apps that you can choose to open or ignore depending on the level of difficulty you want on your quest.

I’m looking forward to the next time I can go questing.  It might even be tomorrow. 🙂
